Houzz Bathroom trends 2024 show that more money is spent on bathroom renovations, functionality over value addition, still popular with wood, as well as toilets with special functions! 2024 is dominated above all by practical gadgets, increased costs, and an adaptation for the future.
A clear theme in this year’s Houzz bathroom trends 2024 report shows that people are increasingly choosing to renovate for the long haul. Fewer choose to renovate in order to be able to sell quickly, and instead choose materials and changes that allow them to stay for a longer period of time.
Functionality for the future
The trend to “flip houses”, i.e. to buy an apartment or house and then sell it on at a higher price after renovation, has decreased significantly in the last year. Among the things that have contributed to the decline are, for example, that companies have started to withdraw people who worked at home to the offices, the prices of building materials have increased, and that the prices of houses and apartments have stabilized somewhat.
This has led to people also adapting their buying behaviour, where retailers and suppliers have noticed a shift from luxury-like furnishings to more functionality. People no longer renovate to be able to sell quickly and expensively, but to be able to stay and enjoy themselves.
- Accessibility in focus: In the study, it was seen that the percentage of homeowners who renovate to make the bathroom more accessible has increased significantly from 23% in 2023 to 27% in 2024.
- Less focus on home value: This, in combination with the fact that you renovate to an ever lesser extent to increase the home’s value, can be interpreted as instead choosing to prioritize your own comfort and convenience over the preferences of potential buyers.
- Fewer major changes: Instead of major changes to the layout of the bathroom, more and more people are also choosing to upgrade existing furniture and installations instead. For example, the percentage who choose to increase the size of the shower has decreased, while more and more choose to update and upgrade ventilation and underfloor heating.
Increased costs for bathroom renovations
It can hardly have passed anyone by that we had a downturn in the economy, with the consequence that much has become more expensive. Among them we find bathroom fittings. In the United States (which is the subject of the study), an increase of about 11% has been seen in the median cost of a bathroom renovation, from $13,500 in 2022 to $15,000 in 2023. Even here in Sweden, we are seeing price increases on everything from materials to labor costs .
What this is due to is not entirely clear, but one can assume that there are several different reasons, such as:
- Increased material costs: The availability of materials has varied greatly due to various crises and events around the world and more and more people are choosing to move their production “home” to Sweden again.
- Increased demand: Many construction companies that focus on private individuals and property maintenance may have had more to do after the stagnation of the construction market in recent years.
- Focus on special functions: Many choose to adapt their bathrooms according to aging and special functions, such as bidet toilets, elevated toilet seats, and other types of aids.
Style and Design in Focus
Just because more and more people choose to focus on practical elements of the bathroom does not mean that you forget about the design! The three most popular styles och the bathroom trends 2024 were, according to the study, Transitional, Contemporary, and Modern, with a bubble Eclectic style winning 5% of study participants’ eyes.
Transitional style
Transitional design combines elements from both traditional and modern design to create a balanced and timeless aesthetic. It is characterized by neutral colors that create a calm and inviting atmosphere. White, beige, gray and other earthy colors dominate. The focus is on combining functionality with an aesthetically pleasing interior, where you often see marble worktops combined with clean lines and modern fixtures.
Contemporary style
Contemporary style is characterized by a modern and timeless aesthetic that emphasizes clean lines, minimalism and functionality. Unlike Transitional style, you are not afraid of sharper edges and more pared down design, without superfluous details. However, natural materials are still welcome in a Contemporary bathroom, as are the basic colors beige, gray and white.
Modern style
In modern style we find even more stripped back and minimalism. Scandinavian minimalism is an example of a Modern style, where airy spaces and natural materials are prioritized to create a clean, stripped-down, but warm atmosphere.
Eclectic style
Eclectic style is about creating a unique and personal atmosphere by combining different styles, time periods and elements. Examples of eclectic style can be combining modern elements with vintage details, minimalist elements with bohemian elements, or of course rustic materials with more elegant surfaces.
Sustainability in focus
In the study, a whopping 84% of the respondents answered that they choose sustainable alternatives in their bathroom projects. But what does that mean in practice, one wonders then?
- Lighting: LED lights are, unsurprisingly, the most popular choice among consumers. It is perhaps not so strange since most of today’s light sources are LED. 55% choose this option.
- Water-saving faucets and fixtures: 41% of respondents choose water-saving options when investing in new faucets and fixtures.
- Timeless design: As we’ve been talking about, 35% choose designs that stand up well over time, which can reduce the need for future renovations and changes of bathroom furnishings.
- Sustainability-focused craftsmenare hired by approximately 6% to get help with the renovation in a sustainable way.
The reasons for choosing more sustainable alternatives vary of course, but you can see some clear trends:
- Cost-effectiveness: 69% of homeowners use their wallets to choose options that use less electricity and water. Not so strange today when energy prices are increasing, one might think.
- Environmental friendliness: In the study, the percentage who choose materials based on environmental considerations was 56%.
- Health reasons: 16% of respondents state that they choose materials for health reasons. Examples can be lead-free faucets, natural materials, and toilet seats with a bidet function.
Conclusion on bathroom trends 2024
Bathroom trends for 2024 reflect a clear direction towards practical, sustainable and long-term solutions, with homeowners prioritizing comfort and function over quick renovations to increase home value. At the same time, attention is paid to aesthetic elements, resulting in bathrooms that combine function and style – a choice that reflects today’s economic conditions and a growing focus on sustainability.
