NATO Jets Down Drone Over Lithuania as Russian Ship Fires Flares at Danish Helicopter

Airspace Breach in Lithuania

NATO aircraft brought down an unmanned vehicle that crossed into Lithuanian territory overnight, the first such interception for the Baltic nation. The craft came down near Pratkūnai, about 100 kilometers west of Vilnius, after roughly half an hour inside Lithuanian airspace. Authorities believe it originated from Belarus and carried explosives, which bomb-disposal teams safely disabled. Lithuania's crisis management chief said the drone skirted the edges of populated areas before it was stopped.

Wider Tensions with Russia

European officials linked the Lithuanian episode and a separate Baltic Sea incident to a larger campaign. Denmark reported that a Russian frigate launched flares at one of its air force helicopters on routine patrol near the port of Gedser, calling the action "completely unacceptable" and summoning Russia's ambassador. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the events formed "part of a broader pattern of Russian aggression and provocation against Europe." NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte described strikes near alliance territory as evidence of Vladimir Putin's "desperation" and his wish to "sow fear and terror."

Ukraine Fighting and Ceasefire Signals

Russian drone attacks persisted across Ukraine even after U.S. President Donald Trump posted on social media that Moscow and Kyiv had agreed to spare each other's energy infrastructure. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv was "ready to support de-escalation" if Washington could guarantee Russia's good faith, while noting continued strikes on energy and logistics targets. The Kremlin called Trump's ceasefire idea "a good idea" but rejected claims that Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries had caused global fuel shortages. Attacks on Kyiv, Sloviansk and Kramatorsk killed at least three people, and Russia said it intercepted 222 Ukrainian drones overnight.

Political Repercussions in Kyiv

Ukraine's parliament voted to remove Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko, who had stepped down on Sept. 7 during a corruption probe into his office. Zelenskyy had suspended him the day before. The dismissal deepens a string of corruption scandals that have eroded the Ukrainian president's public approval.
