Saab wins $303 million order from Sweden for work on future combat aircraft

A New Contract for Future Air Power

Saab has secured a contract from Sweden worth about 2.9 billion Swedish crowns, equivalent to roughly $303 million, to continue developing technologies for future military aircraft. The work is scheduled to run from 2026 through 2028, with options that could extend it to 2030.

The order reflects Sweden’s broader military expansion following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. As a new NATO member, Sweden is investing in long-term defense capabilities, and Saab remains central to those plans.

Manned and Unmanned Ambitions

Saab, the maker of the Gripen fighter, said the contract covers work on both manned and unmanned combat aircraft. In August, the company displayed a full-scale concept model of a future unmanned combat air system, highlighting its interest in autonomous platforms.
