Canva + Affinity vs. Adobe?
Canva recently purchased the Affinity Suite, consisting of Publisher, Designer, and Photo, until now owned and developed by Serif. In a world of subscription Serif have truly stood out with their ”Pay once, cry once” philosophy which have gotten them quite the fanbase.
Canva, on the other hand is a fremium tool that have quite generous free-to-use tools and even more if you subscribe for a monthly fee. Canva is a very simple, albeit powerful, tool that focuses on ready-made images, shapes, etc. making for a quite low threshhold to use.
I have been using both Canva and Affinity for quite a few years by now and I really love the two very different approaches to graphic design. Canva is great to use on-the-go for simple projects, mockups and images for posting on social media, etc. For the slightly more advanced stuff I’ll whip out the iPad and finish up on Affinity, which works great with Apple Pencil, btw. For anything else, I’ll use the stationary with Affinity.
While this setup have worked wonders for me and I do like the both companies, this raises some alarms for me. I truly hope Canva’s only in it to push more advanced tools onto their app and doesn’t make any sweeping changes to how the two platforms function.
Should they add subscription fees to Affinity, is there any reason not to switch to Adobe?
