Employment is killing the family and the fertility rates in the West
The population crisis is affecting the whole Western world, and some more. The main problem of the crisis is people having too few kids, something different countries have tried to solve in different ways. But what’s the actual problem behind the crisis?
Is employment killing us?
According to X-user VB Knives, it is. He gives great overview in form of graphs and examples. The industrial revolution and everything that came after has given us as a society great wealth and prosperity. It has also, however given us declining birth rates, especially in the very comfortable middle-class groups in the West. In the last 100 years, 2 income households have become very normalized to a point where it’s considered odd to have a stay-at-home wife who takes care of the home and kids.
It’s not the employment, per se
If you’ve watched Wolf of Wall Street or similar, you’ll see that different types of employment comes with different types of lifestyles. These lifestyles are, of course, not mandatory by the employer but rather learned through employment.
This is, according to VB Knives, more prevalent in the types of jobs that are catered to women. He calls it an arms race of positional status. This lifestyle is centered around expensive status display items, like cars, clothes, house, household items, and you name it. Unless you make incredibly good money and you can hire help for any and all tasks around the house, this lifestyle will be draining the energy of the couple, who will postpone children into the future due to the expected heavy burden.
Conclusion
In the West, this seems to follow the trend almost to the point, where middle-class households have the fewest children of all and low- and high-income families have the most.
