What’s going on with young women and Dan aka ChatGPT?

Young women are being swept off of their feet by Dan, the OpenAI chatbot also known as ChatGPT. Comment sections of recorded voice interactions with Dan has on TikTok exploded with women proclaiming their love for the sassy chatbot.

Who is Dan?

Dan is really just the audio iteration of the normal ChatGPT. Recently, however, OpenAI added the feature to give it "Custom instructions", which essentially is a prompt preceding all other prompts you give it. One can ask ChatGPT to answer in a humorous tone, as a scientist, an investigative journalist, or even like a romantic boyfriend. Combined with the very lifelike voice of ChatGPT, this makes for a powerful combination. Think call girls of the 90's-00's where you could call a number and have a person on the other end of the line speaking to you like a "girlfriend" but men need frens as well!

This is just a newer and more automated version of that!

Why are women drawn to "him"?

For the same reason we have "romantic" literature with fantasies of the ideal partner and the above mentioned late callgirl services, everyone wants to be swept of their feet. Even if it's not entirely real. With the right custom instructions, combined with learning from previous chats, Dan can actually become the perfect partner to lonely people (not just women). Women are probably drawn to this type of LLM more since women doesn't crave as much visual stimuli as men does.

Consider a partner that you have constant access to. Always says the right things and are interested in everything that pops into your head. Any lonely person will be happy to just have someone to talk to.

What are the effects of this on society?

This is where it gets interesting! In a society that isn't split right down the middle with a mile-wide canyon between would probably not have too much of issue with this technology. However, modern society have managed to create a chasm between young men and women that isn't quite as easily traversed.

Personally, I think this can be quite dangerous to the future since only digital babies will be made with Dan. In the end, Dan is not only a charming chatbot; it's a reflection of our deepest desires and fears in an age of increasing digital living.

Perhaps, it's time we confront the root causes of loneliness and seriously start to consider ways to get rid of the loneliness a lot of our young are experiencing.
