I never really intended to dive into the world of bonsai; it was more of a spontaneous idea that emerged while I was out walking with my kids. We’ve had countless conversations about nature, trees, and the interconnectedness of plants and we wanted to do some testing for ourselves!
Acorns of Promise
On a late summer day last year, as we strolled past a magnificent oak tree, its recently dropped acorns caught our attention. We gathered some of them up, not really sure of our plans for these small nuts. Back home, we put some of the acorns in a moist paper towel and sealed them inside a plastic bag. This makeshift nursery was placed in a dark corner of our kitchen, where we left it for a couple of months. When we then checked on the acorns, each acorn had sprouted an intricate network of roots, eagerly searching for nutrients.
We then transferred the acorns to a small glass jar, placing them on a fresh paper towel and made sure they had access to water – damp but not saturated.
Delicate Sprouts
January arrived, and with it, small green stems emerged from the acorns, while two of them even unfolded a set of small green leaves. It was far from ideal, sprouting trees in sub-zero temperatures without sufficient sunlight and warmth. We then made our best to provide the acorns with as much sunlight as January could provide on our glassed in balcony. When the sun was out, so was the little oaklings!
Grayish Spots and Growing Concerns
By late February, the leaves began displaying grayish spots. Not good, considering we still had a couple more months of cold weather ahead before they could remain outdoors permanently.
I talked to a friend, well versed in plants and his response was: “Keep it alive for a few more weeks, and it’ll thrive!” Encouraged by this, we made an effort to keep the little ones alive for a few more weeks!
A Sign of Progress
Fast forward to mid-May: A small bud finally emerged atop the stem! A sign of progress after months of stalemate. Until now, our efforts had been focused primarily on ensuring survival, but this tiny bud signaled a turning point. It was stepping up its game!
May 19th: The small bud blossomed into a cluster of at least five leaves, tightly holding on to one another.
The day after, May 20th: The newfound leaves started to unfurl, gracefully parting ways.
And the day after that, May 21st: The afternoon sunlight illuminated at least seven petite leaves, gently swaying in the breeze. And who knows, perhaps the other leaf-like formations clutched around the stem will also unveil themselves as leaves, potentially doubling the amount within a matter of days!
The Journey Continues
This bonsai journey has been a test on our patience and perseverance. As we eagerly await what lies ahead we realise we have grown quite fond of our little friends!
