Devin’s top contributor is now… Devin
Devin, the AI that managed to solve coding problems by asking humans for help is now apparently working on improving himself. According to Silas Alberti on X, Devin is now the one contributing the most to his own source code.
While this is quite impressive and, to some extent, even funny, it raises some questions about what direction we're heading. It has only been about 1,5 years since OpenAI released their ChatGPT to the public and progress is made pretty much every day.
Myself have used ChatGPT, a very poor coder by most standards, to code a couple of smaller projects. It works alright as long as you make sure to guide it along taking it one small step at a time. Devin has made this process significantly shorter by increasing the number of steps it can take by itself. Very soon we will find ourselves in the situation where no human can even follow along in the code created by Devin and his buddies, given the trajectory we're on.
No human will write the code, barely any human will understand the code, and absolutely no human will have time to review the code.
This simple automation process will keep us completely in the dark as to what our digital friends will be up to and they don't even have to be sentient to wreak absolute havoc.
